"It had a perfectly round door like a porthole, painted green, with a shiny yellow brass knob in the exact middle."
The most iconic feature of Bag End, the home of Bilbo Baggins and later Frodo Baggins, was its beautiful green door.
The rune found in the top right section of the door is the secret mark made by Gandalf in The Hobbit. The rune was to signal Thorin's Dwarven party that this was the home of their burglar and treasure hunter. The mark is a Dwarvish rune combining the meanings of the "F" and "R" runes. Together the runes indicates that the occupant of the home is in search of a journey for wealth, treasure and adventure and is willing to travel.
Or as Gandalf described it:
"Burglar wants a good job, plenty of excitement and reasonable reward".
